The father of O'Grady was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School, graduating in 1981. Her appearances in commercials before shifting to Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady began her career modelling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She first appeared on the big screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then offered the main character in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Additionally, she appeared in a variety of series. Her roles included independent and made for TV films. Her first big role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC Police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the team's big-haired secretary for ABC's NYPD Blue from 1993 until in 1996. Every year, she earned Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actress in a Drama Series.
